Q&A: I found a Silverline IP in XFF header, is this expected with Shape Configuration?

Question

  • I found a Silverline IP in XFF header in the HTTP request, is this expected with Shape Enterprise Defense Configuration?

Environment

  • Proxy/Proxies
  • Shape Silverline Defense (SSD)
  • Shape Enterprise Defense (SED)

Answer

Yes, this is expected

  • Typically, with Shape Defense integration, there are four IP addresses in the X-Forwarded-For header:
    1. Source IP - IP address of the actual client
    2. Silverline Proxy IP - IP address of Silverline's proxy
    3. Shape Shifter Engines (SSE) IP - IP address of the Shape's pool
    4. Shape Shifter Engines SNAT IP - IP of the SSE that sends the request through Silverline destined for the origin
