Issue: Client traffic / connectivity is not being compressed

Description

Traffic returning to the client users through Silverline proxies is not being compressed.

Environment

  • Silverline proxies
  • WAF
  • DDoS Protection

Cause

Some web servers do not compress data if a request contains a "Via" header. This can lead to longer load times for clients as well as increased bandwidth usage.

Resolution

  • Silverline infrastructure does not compress traffic.  It relays it.
  • Check traffic that is directly going to your application-servers for the handling of the Via HTTP header in the HTTP request.
  • If you suspect site content is no longer being compressed appropriately, you can resolve this by updating the configuration on your web server. Consult your server documentation for details.
