What does the Calculation Type 95th Percentile mean?

Question

  • What does the calculation type "95th Percentile" mean?
  • Why is that measurement important for my Silverline service?

Environment

  • DDoS
  • WAF
  • Proxy
  • Routed

Answer

  • The 95th percentile is a widely used mathematical calculation to evaluate the regular and sustained utilization of network resources.
  • The reason this statistic is so useful in measuring data throughput is that it gives a very accurate picture of the maximum traffic generated on a given interface.
  • The 95th percentile is the highest value left when the top 5% of a numerically sorted set of collected data is discarded.
  • It is used as a measure of the peak value used when one discounts a fair amount for transitory spikes. This makes it markedly different from the average.
  • F5 Silverline calculates the bandwidth consumption via 95th percentile. This measurement unit is used to understand the amount of clean traffic our customers expect normally.
